Much of our recruiting efforts revolve around poster design and placement. Depending on our target markets, we will have at least one poster for each market. Our current target markets are freshmen and sophomores who are: business students, communications majors, graphic design students, or students with web design skills. We create catchy, fun posters to draw the attention of these students to our info nights. In order to best utilize these targeted posters, the recruitment team assembles a list where classrooms are for these groups of students.
We also place flyers in the dormitory mailboxes of freshmen, utilizing the campus mailing services for this. Additionally, our Vice President of Personnel creates a list of large lecture classes containing mostly freshmen and sophomores. Chapter members sign up to speak to the class about PSE’s recruitment at the beginning of the class period.
We have also begun to use more creative advertising methods. One example we have used is distributing free hot chocolate at a central campus location to passing students. Attached to the cups are small flyers containing information on our upcoming recruitment.
Additionally, we have created a section of our website labeled ‘Want to Join PSE?’ that contains key information for interested students. We include details about recruitment, as well as general information about our chapter.
Application Process
We hold two Info Nights prior to interviews each semester, with the same presentation both nights. The format consists of an introduction by the Vice President of Personnel, followed by a short introduction by each Executive Board member, as well as the Faculty Advisor. The Vice President of Personnel explains the recruitment and interview process, and then a short video is shown, highlighting recent and current chapter events. At the end of the presentation, candidates sign up for first round interview times.
Each candidate is given an application form, which requires him/her to include general personal information, a weekly schedule of commitments, and complete a short essay. This form is submitted at the time of the first round interview.
Recruitment Events
Before the first round of interviews, we hold an informal Meet and Greet for all candidates. Chapter members attend to meet and speak with potential members, answering questions about the chapter in a casual setting.
After the first round of interviews, candidates and chapter members attend a Meet the Chapter night. This informal event is another way for candidates to better get to know the members and ask questions. A feedback box allows chapter members to leave comments about potential members during the event.
Interviews
We conduct two rounds of interviews to select our prospective members. The interviews are structured with four interviewers per room, which allows several members to participate in the process and give feedback on the candidate. First round interviews last approximately 10 minutes, and second round interviews last approximately 15 minutes.
We use behavioral-based interviews for both rounds, with four behavioral questions used each round. This requires candidates to draw upon personal experiences and gives us a realistic preview of past work and potential success in the chapter.
A rating given by the interviewers determines if candidates move onto the second round. After the second round, candidates are rated, but the chapter also convenes to vote on each candidate. This voting process determines the prospective member class for the semester.
